Avoid these 5 fatal mistakes when drinking mate

Mate (also known as yerba mate) is more than just a drink – it’s a cultural tradition across Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil. If you want to enjoy it like a local, there are some rules you can’t ignore. Here are the most common mistakes you should avoid when drinking mate – and how to become a true mate drinker.

Quick recap: what is mate?

Mate is a traditional South American infusion made from yerba mate, a native tree from Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. This naturally caffeinated drink is prepared by filling a mate gourd with yerba, adding hot water, and sipping it through a metal straw called a bombilla.

Loved for its unique earthy flavor and powerful health benefits, yerba mate is considered a natural energizer, rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. It’s often compared to coffee or tea but provides a smoother boost of energy without the jitters.

5 mistakes you should never make when drinking mate

1. Adding sugar, sweeteners, or extras

While some people like to sweeten mate with sugar, honey, orange peel, or mint, traditional mate lovers argue it should be enjoyed as it is: naturally bitter. Adding extras changes the authentic taste that has been shared for generations.

2. Moving the bombilla once it’s placed

One of the golden rules of mate: never move the bombilla. The bombilla works as both a straw and a filter, keeping the yerba leaves in place. If you move it around, the infusion will lose its consistency, and you’ll end up clogging the straw.

3. Using boiling water

Pouring boiling water over your yerba will burn the leaves and ruin the taste. The perfect temperature for mate is between 75–80 °C (167–176 °F). This range allows the yerba to release its flavor slowly and last for multiple servings.

4. Reusing the yerba for too long

Yerba mate should be refreshed once it has lost its flavor. If you keep pouring water over the same leaves after they are “washed out,” you’ll only get a weak, flavorless brew. Start fresh with new yerba to fully enjoy the experience.

5. Letting crumbs fall into the mate

Whether you’re snacking or sharing mate with friends, never let crumbs or food particles fall into the gourd. It ruins the flavor – and in social circles, it’s considered a major mate etiquette fail.
